Were they required to protect Callahan over Paquette? I would think he could be a nice add for Vegas - 23 yrs old good size - |

Thanks for being on the ball with this John! Kinda surprised they protected Coburn over Koekkoek or Dotchin |

Paquette's leg got messed up towards the end of the season. I wouldn't expect him to be picked, but that's just me. |

Richard is still available to be picked and the team would retain his rights |

I would expect for TB to swing a trade that assures Garrison is in Vegas and they get a Dumba/Demers/Manson even if it means losing a Koekkoek/Dotchin/this years 1st. |

That is a little harsh for a 23yr old with some skill and ability - |

He is a 4th line winger. Those aren't exactly hard to find. |

I doubt SY makes a deal with LV to unload Garrison but we will know on Wednesday. |

Interesting move to protect Coburn.
I wonder how quickly teams after Wednesday try to sign their UFAs. Expect SY will move slower than the rest of the GMs. Budaj is the only player that imo SY should be signing quickly. |

I am glad they protected Coburn. He fills a role nicely on this team at a reasonable cap hit. As long as his play doesn't decline noticeably like Garrison's did, I am all in favor of keeping him until his contract runs out. He is a good veteran presence and reliable 3rd pairing anchor.
It will be interesting to see which Russian Steve adds to his collection next.
Kucherov
Namestnikov
Vasilevskiy
Sergachev
Who next?
Dump the Callahan, Killorn, and Garrison contracts to bring in Ovi. LOL. |

If Callahan is fit to play, I wonder if he might waive his nmc for Buffalo since he is a Rochester lad. Perhaps SY would consider retaining enough salary to make it interesting for Buffalo. I view the likelihood of dumping Callahan's contract as slim to none. Garrison only one more season so we likely tough it out. Killorn not the worst but too long.
More likely to get more Russian players from the KHL than Ovi from Washington. Would be fun to watch the power play with OVI, Stamkos and Kucherov though.

If Callahan can stay healthy, I don't mind him as a 3rd or 4th line winger, although grossly overpaid to be such. I could at least stomach that possibility, distasteful as it is.
But, I'd rather see Callahan exiled to Ohlund Island for some cap relief, than bounce in and out of the lineup due to injuries.
I agree about Killorn. The cap-hit is not too ludicrous, but the term is.
There is a real possibility that Yzerman is trying to build his own version of a Russian Five unit. He did play for the same Red Wings dynasty that iced the second version Russian Five. He played along a lot of those great Russian players. Namestnikov has a family connection to one of those players. Kucherov is arguably the best Russian player since Ovi. And Vasi is the best goalie to come out of Russia in recent years. So Yzerman already has a Russian base to build on.
Kovalchuk maybe? |

I would prefer a FA so we don't have to pay to acquire. Kovalchuk is also over 35 so a multi year deal could bite us if Kovi returns to Russia. |

I definitely think Yzerman has some sort of deal with Vegas already in place as last week Darren Dreger said on the radio that Tampa was a team that he thought had a deal already. And with that said Yzerman might just add to that deal to get an unprotected D-man that Vegas can take. Its going to be interesting to say the least. This years draft is weak and I think the Bolts #1 pick can be used as a trade chip with Vegas. |

Panarin and Anisimov are available. There has been some discussion between Bowman and SY about those 2. 2 Russians in a package. Stamkos and Panarin make an interesting duo. |
